Carcassonne, France

Carcassonne is a town of medieval times located in Aude plains to the north of the Pyrenees.  It has significance to its strategic location.

I was riding through Carcassonne on one of my solo expeditions on my way to Spain. The most significant point of attraction is obviously the fortress of Carcassonne, Cité de Carcassonne. If you wish, apart from many stores, a wide range of authentic hotels are available in the Citadel.

When I stopped for a coffee in the town center, it was afternoon and after checking out my TripAdvisor app, I have decided to call it a day and stay in Carcassonne for some sightseeing. When I opened my Booking.com app, I have found many hotels in and outside of the Citadel. Travelling alone and having the responsibility of safe parking for my motorcycle, I have chosen to say at Hotel Best Western Le Donjon.

Hotel Best Western Le Donjon, is a four-star hotel located in the walls of the old city. Please be warned, when you are travelling on a bike and looking for a safe parking, make sure that the hotel hosting you has one. Parking is not allowed in the citadel, and most of the parking is public parking with overnight fee, right outside the walls, all in the open. When I made a fuss about not parking my bike unattended in open parking area, the hotel offered my an enclosed parking outside the citadel, with transportation to and from the hotel.

As I have settled at the hotel it was already approaching dusk and I decided to walk around in the citadel. The architecture, texture, smells, the limited light of the dusk; they all make the place come to life.

Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus (Basilique des Saints Nazaire et Celse), Porte d’Aude, Porte Narbonnaise, Musée de l’Inquisition and Château Comtal are all good attraction points in the citadel and I would highly recommend visiting if you have the time.

My hotel concierge has recommended a family owned and run restaurant, which specializes in authentic local cuisine, Au Four Saint Louis. It is around the corner and two minutes walk from the Hotel Best Western Le Donjon. Fairly a small space establishment with excellent wine and eatery.
